The session will cover areas like the recent progress and advances in the research, design and practice of steel concrete composite as well as hybrid structures.
(OS2) Title : Column Bases & Roof Joints

Summary

Column bases and roof joints are one of important connection part in steel structures. Column bases connect upper steel structure to RC foundation. Roof joints connect steel roof to RC frame. Since these are connections between different types of structures, the stress transfer mechanism is complicated. However, only slight number of studies were conducted focusing on the structural performance of column bases. Therefore, the development of the design formula is not sufficient. In the recent severe earthquakes, i.e. 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, many damage of column bases and roof joints has been reported . It is clear that column bases and roof joints are weak points of steel structures. In this session, current research work on column bases and roof joints will be presented and discussed. Topics of the session are planned as;

1) Experimental and analytical study on the structural performances of column bases and
    roof joints.
2) Seismic damage of column bases and roof joints under recent severe earthquakes.
3) Seismic rehabilitation and reinforcement of column bases and roof joints.
4) Proposal of design formula

(OS4) Title : High Performance Steel Structural Systems

Nowadays, novel structural concepts and new metallic materials are not restricted to highly technical areas like aerospace, advanced manufacturing industry or the automatic control industry. They have been wildly used in civil engineering and architecture, especially in steel structures. This session covers such topics as: 1. Novel structural systems, such as tensegrity, cable dome, origami structures, deployable structures etc.; 2. Adaptive steel structures; 3. Structural shape/topology optimization; 4. High performance numeric simulations.

(OS8) Title : Steel Bridge Rehabilitation

Summary

In this session, papers on evaluation, assessment, repair and retrofit of fatigue and corrosion damage in steel highway and railway bridges are presented and discussed. We have a huge number of steel highway and railway bridge structures especially in the urban area and across rivers and straits. Some of those bridges suffer various types of fatigue and corrosion damage, but replace of them should be too expensive, and restriction or close of the traffic could be hardly allowed. Therefore, rehabilitation of those structures becomes of great importance in the near future.
(OS9) Title : Advances in steel and composite structures

This special session focuses on the research, development, recent progress and innovations in the analysis, design and construction of steel concrete composite & hybrid structures. The use of lightweight cementitious materials, high performance steel and high strength concrete and their response behaviour at high temperature will be discussed. Relevant topics include in the presentations are high strength bolts, high strength steel structures, design of 3D modular steel-concrete structures, fire resistant design, concrete filled tubes, lightweight slim floor system, composite shear wall etc.
(OS11) Smart Materials, Devices, and Structures

This session will highlight interesting topics of smart materials, devices, and structures to improve dynamic responses or seismic performances of structures, namely bridges and buildings. In particular, papers related to shape memory alloys (SMAs) will presented to broaden your knowledge of basic material characteristics of SMAs, developing smart devices using SMAs, and improving seismic response of structures using SMAs' applications. Additionally, papers related to other materials to develop smart devices will be also discussed. The presenters and attendants will share the basic and advanced information of SMAs and their applications.
(OS12) Advanced Technologies for Construction/Maintenance of Steel Bridges
